Mutations or loss of PTEN are associated with an increased activation of mTOR 37, 38 ; . PTEN is inactivated through the reversible formation of a disulfide bond in its active site 39 ; . Furthermore, it has been suggested that mTOR is involved in the regulation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 40 43 ; and that hypoxia can trigger hypophosphorylation of mTOR and some of its effectors in a hypoxia-inducible factor-independent manner 41 ; . Obviously low oxygen pressure hypoxia ; should influence the redox potential within the cell. Additionally, it has been suggested that the UV response pathway induces the phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase in an mTOR-dependent manner via the generation of reactive oxygen species 44 ; . Finally, TOR can associate with the mitochondrial outer membrane 45 ; , which could make it directly susceptible to redox ; signals from this organelle. The effect of mutations within the mTOR FATC domain has been investigated in two studies 7, 8 ; . Both show that deletion of the carboxyl-terminal tryptophan as well as small deletions three or more residues ; of the COOH terminus abolish mTOR autophosphorylation activity as well as mTOR-dependent phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein and p70 S6 kinase. Thus, the COOH-terminal deletions abolished mTOR function. The size and arborization of the bipolar cell axon terminals, which, like the TH-immunoreactive processes, are narrowly confined to the outermost stratum of the inner plexiform layer directly adjacent to the inner nuclear layer Fig. 3, A, B ; , suggest that they are the recently identified giant bistratified bipolar cells Mariani, 1983 ; . Two immunocytochemically labeled processes were not found to form both postsynaptic members of the dyad. Also, no ganglion cell dendrites were observed to be one of the postsynaptic elements of the dyad involving the TH-containing amacrine cell processes. Unlabeled amacrine cell processes formed 3 1% n 10 ; the synapses onto the dopaminergic amacrines. The membranes at these synaptic contacts were smoothly parallel and separated by a widened intercellular cleft of 13 nm. A small cluster of 310 synaptic vesicles was present at the presynaptic side of the junction. The cytoplasmic aspect of the postsynaptic membrane was usually bordered by a 28-nm-thick opacity. Such junctions have the characteristics of asymmetrical Colonnier, 1968 ; or Gray's type I 1959 ; synapses Fig. 5B ; . The least frequent synaptic input to TH-immunoreactive amacrine cells was from other similarly labeled amacrine cells, and these junctions represented 16% n 5 ; of the synaptic input to the dopaminergic neurons. The synaptic output of the TH-containing amacrine cell processes accounted for 80% n 116 ; of the synapses involving TH-immunoreactive processes. These synapses were primarily onto nonimmunoreactive amacrine cells 92%, n 107 ; , and these contacts were either onto profiles in the inner plexiform layer or onto cell bodies in the inner nuclear layer Fig. 2, AC ; . Often, in a single plane of section, a single TH-immunoreactive amacrine profile made 2 or 3 synaptic junctions onto one postsynaptic element Fig. 2A ; . Much less frequently found were synapses onto bipolar cell axon terminals 3%, n 4 ; , and these occurred at regions where the TH-containing amacrine was also postsynaptic to the bipolar axon terminal, as described above Fig. 5A ; . This synaptic arrangement has been termed a reciprocal synapse. The remainder of the TH-reactive synaptic output 4%, y1 5 ; was onto other TH-labeled processes, as described above. No synaptic contacts involving TH-immunoreactive processes and ganglion cell dendrites were found. The results described above, derived from electron microscopy, have been replicated in 3 retinas from 3 different monkeys. I studied the processes of litter production and decomposition and the relationship between forested land used by caiara people and the resilience of the forest as shown by mechanisms that interfere with sustainability. I examined forests of 5-yr and 25-yr-old, growing in areas once used for subsistence agriculture, compared to a near-climax forest tract. Litter production for a 2-yr period ; showed no significant difference between the three areas; litter production means were 9.927, 8.707 and 10.031 kg ha yr, respectively for the 5-yr, 25-yr-old and climax forests. Input of nutrients by the litter was greatest for N and K 156 and 38 kg ha yr, respectively ; in the climax forest; for P and Mg 342 and 58 kg ha yr, respectively ; in the 5-yr forest, and for Na 17.6 kg ha yr ; the 25-yr forest. Litter accumulation on the ground 3.040-3.730 kg ha yr ; also was not significantly different in the three areas. Turnover times for the litter 1 K ; were 0.33, 0.42 and 0.38 for the 5-yr, 25-yr and climax forests, respectively. Nutrient retention and conservation mechanisms were present in all three areas as observed by: a ; rapid decomposition and freeing of nutrients from the litter; b ; large root biomass associated with the litter and on the soil surface; and c ; efficient removal of nutrients in rainwater by the forest canopy.
