California: Complementation and recombination studies on me-2 alleles of Neurospora crassa.Interallelic complementation has been demonstrated for 12 of 44 methionine-2 mutant strains and the complementation map divides the me-2 gene into four physiological subunits. The use of marker genes on either side of the me-2 locus has facilitated the demonstration of interallelic recombination by crossing over and by conversion. A sample of alleles, chosen to represent the different complementation classes, has been linearly ordered on the basis of both interallelic crossing over and total prototroph frequencies. The data are consistent with a linear order of mutable sites within the gene, and suggest that the four physiological subunits of the gene can be translated into linear segments of the genetic map. No correlation was found between the degree of complementation, as judged by growth assays, and the distance between the two mutant sites. A residual increase in DNA of 30-50 percent, unaccompanied by protein synthesis, occurs within a few hours of the starvation of an auxotroph for the amino acid it requires. Thereafter the DNA content of the starved population decreases, and after ten days density gradient centrifugation yields no evidence for DNA replication. Nonetheless, during the interval spontaneous mutations take place at a constant rate. The possibility that infrequent exchange reactions occur is under consideration. A total of 15, 119 LASIK cases from 7168 patients with adequate follow-up were included for analysis, including 11, 232 primary cases and 3887 enhancements. There were 8348 cases from May 1995 through February 1999 group 1 ; , and 6771 cases from December 2000 through October 2002, including 5013 cases in group 2 and 1758 cases in group 3 Table 1 ; . For group 1 and group 3, no more than 1 case occurred on a single day. We identified 61 0.40% ; eyes that developed DLK after LASIK, including 40 cases with Stage 1 DLK, 18 cases with Stage 2 DLK, and 3 cases with Stage 3 DLK. Gram stains, bacterial cultures, and fungal cultures were performed on 4 of the first 11 cases that occurred from 1995 through 1999, and all were negative. In particular they examined the increased scope for ATP turnover and the increased velocity of muscle fibre activation in sprinting warm muscle. All of the participants in the study performed the same sprint test at both normal and elevated muscle temperatures. But instead of warming the test person's muscles with exercise, they raised their muscle temperature by placing the cyclists in a warm bath. During both `normal' and elevated temperature cycle sprints, the team measured the athletes' power outputs and pedal rates. In addition the scientists took a muscle biopsy from each of the sportsmen immediately before and after the sprint test in order to assess the ATP turnover. Finally, the muscle fibre conduction velocity was measured with a multi channel surface EMG recording from the thigh muscle. The group found that the ~3C increase in muscle temperature significantly increased ATP turnover and that this increase was associated with an increase in muscle fibre conduction velocity. This indicated that the increased energy turnover in warmed muscles was linked to the faster activation of the muscle fibres, and warming was also associated with an in increase in pedal rate and in total power output so that the maximal power output was ~20% higher when the participants had warm muscles. In contrast to some previous studies on maximal sprint performance, Gray and colleagues conducted the sprint and ferret.
