Relation to other represented objects etc. Harnest 1971 ; , offered a survey of early perspective fig. 9 ; , analysed a number of Northern paintings, particularly German ones in terms of their perspectival constructions. His enthusiasm for their posited precision sometimes imposed regularity not evident to other scholars. This approach was pursued in his Habilitation 197 * ; . Collier 1975 ; , returned to questions of perspective in the art of Petrus Christus and Dirk Bouts. He began with a survey of the work of Kern and Doehlemann. He noted that Schne's 1938 ; , monograph on Bouts had "pointed out that Bouts learned to handle perspective with some competence and used two examples.to illustrate the point". Brand Philips 1967 ; , had emphasized symbolic aspects of Van Eyck's use of space. Upton 1972 ; , had attributed Christus' use of a unified perspective to an empirical development. Like Upton, Schabacker 1974 ; , was interested in the aesthetic effects of perspective without explaining how it arose or what methods were used. Bazin 1952 ; , had suggested that Christus might have travelled to Italy and learned the theory. Collier 1975, 97 ; claimed that Christus: seems to have been the first Northern artist to display both the correct use of the vanishing point for a single surface and for a unified perspective of several planes. Both of these discoveries probably occured in the decade of the 1450's. It is perhaps of some conseuqence that this occured precisely during the years that the artist's name vanished from the documents of Northern Europe, and that when it reappeared, the technique emerged in the work of Dirk Bouts. Bouts handled perspective in the same manner as Christus, but added the discovery of transversal spacing to art. His knowledge of perspective seems to have been passed on only to his son Albrecht and probably to Hugo van der Goes. Later in the century, even artists of the stature of Hans Memlinc and Gerard David showed ignorance of this knowledge, although David did display the first accurate oblique perspective even before the publications of Jean Plerin. At this point, perspective became common knowledge, and Gossaert, van Orley and other painters displayed a mastery of its use. The final chapter of Collier's thesis focussed specifically on the work of Christus and Bouts. Ragghianti 1977 ; , in his book on Brunelleschi returned to these themes in a chapter entitled: Tuscany and Burgundy: Italian Perspective and Flemish Perspective, again showing reconstructions based on Kern, adding little in terms of new material. Myers 1978 ; , in a speculative dissertation surveyed the origins of perspective with Brunelleschi and Masaccio and claimed that Petrus Christus probably learned about focussing the parallels of several planes in perspective from Antonella da Messina in 1456 and did not know the rules of correct perspective until 1457. Egner 1979 ; , surveyed changes in painted architectural space in the work of Van Eyck, Bouts, Memling and Van Orley. Baroque 1600-1700 ; Nielsen 1899 ; , examined the work of Poussin, the school of Versailles Eustache Le Sueur, Charles Le Brun, and Pierre Mignard ; , the Royal Academy Bosse and Dubreuil ; and later painters including Watteau and David ; . Nielsen 1901 ; , explored famous practitioners of perspective in the Netherlands Rubens, Rembrandt, de Hooch ; . Danils.

Deficit Sanderson et al., 1974 ; . A further parallel between the frog and many mammals is that, in both, the ipsilaterally projecting region is heterogeneous, containing contralaterally as well as ipsilaterally projecting cells Guillery, 1982 ; . In the frog, our evidence suggests that thyroxine causes the production of an ipsilateral projection by triggering the production of a new population of neurons, some of which project ipsilaterally. Intriguingly, there is a suggestion that a similar event may be involved in the development of an ipsilateral projection in mammals since, as in the frog, ipsilaterally projecting cells in the normally developing cat apparently begin to be born later than contralaterally projecting ones Walsh et al., 1983 ; . A delay in the occurrence of the event which determines ganglion cells for ipsilateral projections in developing cats might result in the reduction of the retinal area which contains such cells and a consequently reduced ipsilateral projection in albinos. Since both thyroxine and melanin are synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine Garcia et al., 1979; Norris, 1980 ; the possibility of a common signal, or of a common mechanism which underlies both substances' effects on axonal projection laterality, is raised. In this context, it is also of interest' that strabismus, a misalignment of the two eyes which often accompanies albinism in mammals, has also been noted as a symptom of the human hypothyroid syndrome, cretinism Costa, 1972 ; . The involvement of hormones in metamorphic change and in development of the nervous system. The present findings are of interest both in understanding the basis of metamorphic changes in the anuran nervous system and in considering the involvement of hormones in nervous system development generally. Both changes in neuronal connectivity during anuran metamorphosis reviewed in Kollros, 1981 ; and direct effects of thyroxine on neuronal tissue Kaltenbach, 1953a, b; Kollros and McMurray, 1956; Kaltenbach and Hobbs, 1972; Gona and Gona, 1977 ; have been documented previously. The present case, however, is distinctive in that it represents the first in which it has been shown that the local action of thyroxine can result in the production of a new pathway to a target some distance away. Given our previous results on the birth dates of ipsilaterally projecting neurons Hoskins and Grobstein, 1985b ; , as well as the fact that induced ipsilateral projections are always accompanied by enhanced asymmetric growth in the hormonetreated eye, it seems likely that the ipsilaterally projecting axons in the thyroxine-treated tadpoles originate from retinal ganglion cells which were produced as a result of the hormone injection. This would suggest that thyroxine is controlling the production of a new population of ganglion cells as well as influencing in some way the axonal projections of some of these cells. The effect of local thyroxine action in the present case is dramatic in the context of the nervous system, but the mitogenic and morphogenetic effects of thyroxine on some non-neural tissues are well established. For example, a metamorphic transition in hemoglobin type has been shown to result not from changes in the hemoglobin content of existing blood cells but rather from the thyroxine-dependent production of a new, adult-type blood cell population, and the coincident thyroxine-mediated destruction of the larval red blood cell population Forman and Just, 1981 ; . Similarly, the thyroxine-dependent formation of gland rudiments in the skin of X. laevis tadpoles seems to involve a thyroxine-triggered alteration in the mitotic pattern of the skin cell population, rather than direct effects of the hormone on the morphological characteristics of existing skin cells McGarry and Vanable, 1969 ; . In these cases, as in the present one, thyroxine seems to act by altering a proliferative pattern and producing a new kind of cell. In light of the above evidence that thyroid hormone influences patterns of proliferation and subsequent cell differentiation in systems as diverse as the nervous system, the circulatory system, and the epidermis, it is worth considering the possibility that such effects will be found in other parts of the metamorphosing anuran nervous system as well. At the same time, it is already clear that neither the action of thyroxine on the nervous system nor metamorphic change.

Cloning and Expression of HIV-1 Group O RT Variants--Sixty-six bacterial clones expressing RT variants were available from a previous study and were obtained from three untreated HIV-1 group O-infected individuals living in Spain 24 ; . Genomic regions encoding the 66-kDa subunit of the RT were PCR-amplified from patient samples, cut with the NcoI and EcoRI restriction enzymes, and then cloned into the pRT6 or pTrcHisB Invitrogen ; expression vector 22, 24 ; . The pRT6 clones were used for large-scale purification of p66, whereas constructs made with pTrcHisB were used for screening the expression levels of RT variants. The RT clones were derived from blood samples obtained from patient ESP1 in January 1996 clones 1 4 and 2124 ; , April 1996 clones 14 20 ; , and August 1996 clones 2528 and 55 66 from patient ESP2 in January 1996 clones 10 13 and 36 54 ; and May 1996 clones 59 and from patient ESP3 in January 1996 clones 29 35 ; 24 ; obtain an expression vector for p51 with the histidine tag for reconstitution and purification, the coding region of the 51-kDa subunit of HIV-1 RT was cloned in the expression vector pTrcHisB. Provement of his tremor with the use of alcohol. He had difficulty eating, drinking, and performing his job as a maintenance technician. The action and postural components of his tremor had become more disabling in recent years, and medical therapy with different combinations of propranolol hydrochloride, primidone, and clonazepam had not been effective during the past years. Ten years before the current examination, the patient had developed resting tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity on the right side of the body that progressed to the left side. By the age of 59 years, the resting, action, and postural tremors were significantly worse and had become incapacitating for the patient. Medical therapy with different combinations of propranolol, primidone, and clonazepam was not effective. The addition of levodopa, trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride, pergolide mesylate, and amantadine hydrochloride improved his rigidity, bradykinesias, and postural stability, but only mildly improved his resting tremor and left his action and postural tremor unchanged. The patient underwent a left GPi pallidotomy, with complete resolution of the resting tremor in his right upper extremity as well as improvement of the rigidity and bradykinesia. The action and postural components of his right arm tremor were not affected by this procedure, and there was no improvement of ipsilateral symptoms. One year later, a left Vim thalamic DBS was placed, resulting in complete suppression of the action and postural tremor in his right arm and triptorelin.

And the reason why the good are useless has now been ex- plained? True. Then shall we proceed to show that the corruption of the majority is also unavoidable, and that this is not to be laid to the charge of philosophy any more than the other? By all means. And let us ask and answer in turn, first going back to the description of the gentle and noble nature. Truth, as you will remember, was his leader, whom he followed always and in all things; failing in this, he was an impostor, and had no part or lot in true philosophy. Yes, that was said. Well, and is not this one quality, to mention no others, greatly at variance with present notions of him? Certainly, he said. And have we not a right to say in his defence, that the true lover of knowledge is always striving after being--that is his nature; he will not rest in the multiplicity of individuals which is an appearance only, but will go on--the keen edge will not be blunted, nor the force of his desire abate until he have at- tained the knowledge of the true nature of every essence by a sympathetic and kindred power in the soul, and by that power drawing near and mingling and becoming incorporate with very being, having begotten mind and truth, he will have knowl- edge and will live and grow truly, and then, and not till then, will he cease from his travail. Nothing, he said, can be more just than such a description of him. And will the love of a lie be any part of a philosopher's nature? Will he not utterly hate a lie? He will. And when truth is the captain, we cannot suspect any evil of the band which he leads? Impossible. Justice and health of mind will be of the company, and tem- perance will follow after? True, he replied. Neither is there any reason why I should again set in array the philosopher's virtues, as you will doubtless remember that courage, magnificence, apprehension, memory, were his natural gifts. And you objected that, although no one could deny what I then said, still, if you leave words and look at facts, the persons who are thus described are some of them manifestly useless, and the greater number utterly depraved, we were then led to inquire into the grounds of these accusations, and have now arrived at the point of asking why are the majority bad, which question of necessity brought us back to the examination and definition of the true philosopher. Exactly. And we have next to consider the corruptions of the philo- sophic nature, why so many are spoiled and so few escape spoil- ing--I speaking of those who were said to be useless but not wicked--and, when we have done with them, we will speak of the imitators of philosophy, what manner of men are they who aspire after a profession which is above them and of which they are unworthy, and then, by their manifold inconsistencies, bring upon philosophy and upon all philosophers that universal reprobation of which we speak. What are these corruptions? he said. I will see if I can explain them to you. Everyone will admit that a nature having in perfection all the qualities which we re- quired in a philosopher is a rare plant which is seldom seen among men? Rare indeed. And what numberless and powerful causes tend to destroy these rare natures! What causes? In the first place there are their own virtues, their courage, temperance, and the rest of them, every one of which praiseworthy qualities and this is a most singular circumstance ; destroys and distracts from philosophy the soul which is the possessor of them. That is very singular, he replied. Then there are all the ordinary goods of life--beauty, wealth, strength, rank, and great connections in the State--you under- stand the sort of things--these also have a corrupting and dis- tracting effect. I understand; but I should like to know more and trizivir.

It appears that traditional micro indicators are useful for internal and external measurements of single companies' logistic performance, but inadequate for the whole, interrelated, supply chain. A similar statement can be made for traditional logistics performance indicators on a macro level. They are useful for comparative analyses among different nations, but they are inadequate for comparing different supply chains. Moreover, there is very little information on regional differences i.e. intra-European differences and the effectiveness of policy measures in the area of logistics and telematics facilities.

Introduction The attachment and removal of phosphate from proteins catalysed by protein kinases and protein phosphatases regulates nearly all aspects of cell life. In recent years it has become apparent that abnormal protein phosphorylation is a cause or consequence of many diseases and pathological conditions such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke. For this reason, the development of drugs that modulate the activities of particular protein kinases and phosphatases has become a priority for the pharmaceutical industry [1]. Several compounds that inhibit a protein kinase or a protein phosphatse have been approved for clinical use. Cyclosporin, the immunosuppressant drug that permitted the widespread use of organ transplantation, inhibits a protein phosphatase protein phosphatase 2B calcineurin ; [2], while its successor, rapamycin, inhibits a protein kinase, termed the"mammalian target of and trovafloxacin.
